Rose 31 – The Rose That Isn’t What You Expect
Launched in 2006, Rose 31 by Le Labo is a Floral Woody Musk Eau de Parfum created by Daphé Bugey — a fragrance that takes the most classic of all floral notes and completely subverts it. This is not a feminine rose. This is a rose stripped of its sweetness and dressed in cumin, oud, and labdanum — dark, smoky, and deeply androgynous. One of Le Labo’s most beloved and enduring creations.

The opening is immediately striking — rose and cumin open together in an accord that is simultaneously floral and animalic, warm and slightly raw. Cumin, used with precision, adds a skin-like, almost bodily warmth that makes the rose feel intimate and alive rather than decorative. The heart deepens the rose with vetiver and cedar, adding a smoky, woody dryness that pulls the composition away from anything conventionally feminine. The dry-down is where Rose 31 becomes truly extraordinary — agarwood (oud), guaiac wood, olibanum, and labdanum create a rich, resinous, almost incense-like base that is dark, complex, and hauntingly beautiful, with musk adding a final skin-close warmth that makes the entire composition feel like it was made for your skin alone.
